Even though these days more and more students are opting for distance learning programs and courses, there are still many people who are ambivalent about the idea, or, worse still, completely reluctant to give it a try. The latter argue that the traditional classroom and face-to-face private tuition are more effective and conducive to learning than the virtual classroom. Is this true though? Below are some of the major benefits of distance learning in relation to on-site language courses and private lessons. #1 Distance learning makes life so much easier. Let’s assume for a minute that at the end of the day you preferred to have private lessons at home rather than take one of our online courses. This means that, from now on, once or twice a week you’ll have to ... remind yourself that a private tutor is going to come over and discreetly scrutinise you and the surroundings before sitting down and starting the lesson. The house is clean alright, but unfortunately it’s still untidy. Who can blame you though? You were swamped with work the week before and keeping your flat spotless wasn’t one of your boss’s priorities obviously. You also realise that you’re still in your pyjamas desperately trying to find your right-foot slipper (hint: the dog attacked and hid it while you were too busy updating your Facebook status!). Tick, tock. The lesson starts in less than ten minutes. After running around and panicking for a couple of minutes, you decide to take action: you get dressed in a hurry, you ventilate the rooms as much as possible, you ‘tidy up’ the flat at the very last minute shoving everything in the wardrobe, and finally, exhausted and out of breath, you sit and wait for the teacher. If that’s not an unnecessarily stressful situation, I don’t know what is. With online lessons, you can skip this part altogether and save yourself the frustration. It’s so easy. All you have to do is switch on your laptop and log in on your Skype (or Zoom) account a few minutes before the lesson begins. Quite simple, isn’t it? #2 You can have a lesson wherever you are. Our online courses have no geographic restrictions: you can have lessons, take tests, and study towards your learning goals in the comfort of your own home (or any other type of accommodation, for that matter, provided that you have a laptop with access to the Internet and some of the coursebooks with you). If you move into a different region; if you emigrate; if you travel or go on business trips often, you won’t have to drop the course or wave goodbye to your English teacher, simply because the digital classroom can fit your laptop case and hence follow you wherever you go. #3 It’s flexible and convenient. Scenario 1: You are a working mother with kids. Scenario 2: You are a sales representative, often away on a business trip, and need to improve your English for work. Scenario 3: You have mobility problems and so attending classes in a language school, community centre, or college multiple times per week sounds like a cumbersome idea. Whatever the case may be, when it comes to learning a language, distance learning solves all your problems because it’s flexible and convenient. I’d like to further illustrate my point with an example. If you were to attend a course in a brick-and-mortar language school, you’d then have to adhere to the weekly schedules and yearly timetables imposed by the Director of Studies or the educational institute, not to mention the fact that you’d have to commute. Conversely, if you were to take our online courses, there would literally be zero commuting time and the teacher would make sure that the course is adapted to your needs and tight schedule. #4 You can have access to a wealth of educational material. Did you know that we have a plethora of educational material in digital form? We can give you access to such material at the click of a button. That’s right. (Click.) “Your file has been sent.” No photocopies, no USB discs, no need for the teacher or the student to carry a laptop around. #5 It’s more economical. Tuition fees in language schools can be quite steep, so much so that sometimes you can’t help feeling ripped off as you’re starting to think that you’re paying more for the decoration and maintenance of the classrooms and reception desk rather than the actual educational services you’re being offered. In Broad Horizons English, we do our best to keep the tuition fees as low as possible and ensure that at the end of the day every single one of our students gets their money’s worth. In other words, we invest most of our funds, time and resources in the provision of high-quality English courses, offering a unique learner experience as well as a lot of value-added services (including tailor-made handouts, progress reports, access to a self-study group, and free resources). For all of the above reasons, Broad Horizons English offers effective and comprehensive online language programmes to both individuals with limited free time as well as corporations from around the world.
